Patch Chrono Trigger Ds Changes
It's worth a shot, but I'll never consider it the quintessential version of CT. As people have noted, the dialogue has been retranslated; there are mixed opinions on this, but I think the retranslation was a step down from the original. I'm wary that it could just be nostalgia speaking, but there is one objective thing that I can point to that seems to be a huge loss-the omission of Frog's medieval dialect. I remember reading an interview with the new translator on Chrono Compendium, and he said that he was rather rushed in the new CT translation and wanted to put in the dialect, but didn't have time to do it right. Unfortunately, this means that a huge part of Frog's character is completely gone-he doesn't seem nearly as noble or badass talking like everyone else.
For instance, his entrance has no oomph anymore: compare 'Lower thine guard, and thou'rt allowing the enemy in' vs. 'Lower your guard, and you are allowing the enemy in'. Which one has more impact? Also, if I remember correctly, some of the more quirky lines like 'Ozzie's in a pickle!' Are gone too. And the streamlining of item names to be exactly the same as Final Fantasy games feels dumb to me, though that's nitpicking and I'll be the first to admit that that is definitely nostalgia speaking. The new content is worth checking out though.
Chrono Trigger Ds Differences
Chrono Trigger Impossible: Chrono Trigger Impossible is a hack of Chrono Trigger (U) rom making it more difficult to beat than before. Unlike some other hard mods, this one has been tested properly and is fully playable from the beginning to the end. Although the name may lead you thinking otherwise, the hack is no way impossible to beat.
For $15 you can't go wrong, considering playing it on the SNES in all its original glory will run you $75-$250 depending on the condition the game is in. I enjoyed the DS playthrough, and thought the little monster arena mini game was fun too. That said, there's nothing like hearing that satisfying clack when you power up the Super Nintendo and see that 16 bit pendulum come swinging in as the full soundtrack kicks in. It's a glorious, glorious thing, and I heartily recommend it at some point in your life. I like to reward people for their work, so I buy things I like.
I could keep playing Chrono Trigger on my emulator on PC, but I wanted to pay for it on my Wii. My opinion would be if you haven't bought Chrono Trigger somewhere else, grab the DS version. If it were up to me, I wouldn't make the purchase. I hear a lot of complaints regarding the translation. It would bug me, personally. I've spent over a dozen years with the original SNES translation and I'm going to stick to it.
Chrono Trigger Ds Rom Patch
If you don't have Chrono Trigger anywhere else, get it. It's an amazing game. If you do have it elsewhere, I hear you're not missing out much, but I don't know if there is any extra content on it.
